Shi Zilin and Lin Minyi claim top prizes in Japanese Speech Contest for Students of Private Higher Education Institutions in Guangdong

The 8th Japanese Speech Contest for Students of Private Higher Education Institutions in Guangdong was held at the Academic Lecture Hall on the afternoon of May 28. This year’s contest, hosted by South China Business College, was co-sponsored by the South China Division of the China Association of Japanese Teaching and Research and the Guangdong Federation of Japanese Teaching and Research. The contestants were divided into the freshman/sophomore group and the junior/senior group. SCBC students Shi Zilin and Lin Minyi won the championship for their respective group.

Twenty-nine outstanding contestants from 14 private universities took to the stage in the order they were drawn to give a proposition speech and an impromptu speech. In the proposition speech session, 14 freshmen/sophomores and 15 juniors/seniors delivered four-minute speeches on the topics of “A memorable word” and “The Future of Digital Life” respectively.

In the impromptu speech session, after the contestants drew a question number, the moderator announced the corresponding topic that was determined before the contest by the judge panel. The contestants had three minutes for preparation and then gave a two-minute speech to show their Japanese proficiency, encyclopedic knowledge, critical thinking and flexible response. The panel evaluated the contestants’ speeches based on pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary, speech content and delivery. The fierce competition attracted a lot of attention and the excellent performance of the contestants impressed the audience with a festival of Japanese language performance that was both visually and aurally satisfying.

After an exciting competition, SCBC’s Shi Zilin and Lin Minyi won first prize and Zhang Xin Yueyang and Chen Haopeng received second prize in their respective group.



SCBC signs Memorandum of Agreement on the “2+2” Bachelor’s Program with the University of Portsmouth

Chris Chang, deputy vice-chancellor of the University of Portsmouth, and Yang Yejie, director of the China Office, visited SCBC on the morning of May 29 and were received by Vice President Lai Zhili and the Head of the Center for International Cooperation and Exchange at the International Conference Hall. The two sides signed a memorandum of agreement on the “2+2” Bachelor’s Program in English and Business English.

Lai Zhili welcomed the two distinguished guests from the University of Portsmouth and introduced the basic facts of SCBC at the meeting, including its history, characteristics, disciplinary development, international exchange and cooperation, and in particular, the scale of student population of English-related majors. Lai hoped that with this cooperation as a good start, SCBC would develop more cooperation projects with the University of Portsmouth.

A memorandum of agreement on the “2+2” Bachelor’s Program in English and Business English was signed after the two sides had an in-depth discussion on the “2+2” collaborative education for English and Business English majors, faculty exchange, scientific research cooperation and post-graduate program.



SCBC athletes claim 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze in Guangdong Collegiate Championships

SCBC athletics and swimming teams, led by team leader Deng Huihong and coaches Li Jidong and He Miaoxian, won 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze in the 2022 Guangdong Collegiate Athletics and Swimming Championships held from May 19 to 28.

The Championships, organized by the Department of Education of Guangdong province, ran into four groups: Group AA and AB for undergraduates, Group BA for P.E. majors, Group BB for high level athletes, and Group CA and CB for students of tertiary technical and vocational education.

SCBC students received quite a few prizes in the Championships, specifically: Wang Jingwen won gold in the high jump and ranked seventh in the long jump in Group AB for women; Li Jiawei won silver in the 50m backstroke and bronze in the 100m backstroke in Group A for women; Weng Haoyuan ranked fifth in the javelin final in Group AB for men; Ou Xiaolan was in the sixth place in the 200m individual medley in Group A for women; You Yunqing was in the seventh place in the 200m final in Group AB for women; Liu Zhida was in the eighth place in the 1500m final in Group AB for men.



Vice-President of Josai International University visits SCBC to discuss the “1+4” International Preparatory Program

Vice President of Japan Josai International University (JIU) Masato Kurabayashi, and Deputy Director of the International Education Center Gong Wei visited SCBC on the afternoon of May 30. The guests were warmly received by Supervisor Gu Yeli and the Head of the Center for International Cooperation and Exchange at the International Conference Hall. The two sides reached a preliminary agreement on the upcoming cooperation on the “1+4” International Preparatory Program. The meeting was hosted by Professor Chi Shengnyu, dean of the International School.

Gu Yeli introduced the enrollment prospects of Japanese language majors at SCBC, its current student population and the fruitful results of the “2+2” and “3+1” international collaborative program that started from November 2018. He hoped that on the basis of the previous cooperation, the exchange and cooperation would be strengthened to accelerate the progress of the “1+4” International Preparatory Program and to promote mutual development.

The two sides had a preliminary discussion and reached an agreement on the admission criteria and the implementation plan for the “1+4” International Preparatory Program. The drafting of a new program prospectus and the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding are under way.

After the meeting, Kurabayashi and his delegation met with students of the “2+2” and “3+1” Program at the Center for International Cooperation and Exchange. Afterwards, he presented the new program to the Japanese language majors and the Japanese language minors at the F101 Academic Lecture Hall.
