SCBC co-sponsors the 11th China-Russia Arctic Forum
On October 21, as the 11th China-Russia Arctic Forum opened at Ocean University of China, a concurrent session of the Forum was held at South China Business College, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. With the theme of “China-Russian Arctic Cooperation: New Visions and Paths, the Forum, which lasted for two days and focused on the frontier issues in the area, welcomed both online and offline participation.
Gu Yeli, SCBC's supervisor, delivered a speech. He said that China and Russia had good experience in Arctic cooperation, and the two countries should be working more closely together in the area in the post-epidemic era. He hoped that SCBC’s Center for Polar Issues Studies would take this opportunity to enhance the exchange and communication with the research institutions in the two countries, so that it could become better equipped to build up its talent pool that could make more contribution to the research of polar issues. Sergey Andriushin, Vice-Rector for International Affairs of St. Petersburg State University, said that the Forum had attracted many experts in the field and was an academic feast of high quality, which would enhance the exchange and cooperation between universities and promote the development of academic research in Arctic studies that could boost intellectually the practical cooperation between Russia and China in the Arctic region.
The sub-themes of the Forum included “Cooperation in scientific investigation in the Arctic”, “Arctic energy cooperation”, “Cooperation in environmental protection for the Arctic ”, “Cooperation in Arctic research and education”. Liu Lanfeng, Director of SCBC’s Center for Polar Issues Studies, chaired the topic of “Arctic Energy Cooperation”. Luo Ying, Wang Xiangyu, Wang Xiaoxi and Li Yang, who were either full-time or part-time researchers of the Center, and more than 40 experts from China and Russia, shared via online video streaming the latest achievements and future possibilities in Arctic studies.
It is reported that the China-Russia Arctic Forum was launched in 2012 with an abiding focus on academic exchange and cooperation in Arctic studies. Now it has developed into an important mechanism for regular exchange and communication between Arctic scholars of the two countries. This year the Forum was hosted by Ocean University of China, co-sponsored by South China Business College and co-organized by St. Petersburg State University of Russia. The Forum received participation from more than 30 universities and research institutes at home and abroad, including Xiamen University, Wuhan University, St. Petersburg State University, Shanghai Institutes for International Studies, First Institute of Oceanography of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Polar Research Institute of China and Russian Academy of Social Sciences.
