Two students win grand prize in English Writing Competition for College Students
On June 18, the final and award ceremony of the 9th Union Cup English Writing Competition for College Students in Guangdong province was held online. After qualification, 286 contestants from 59 institutions entered the final in which four students from SCBC won awards.
Specifically, Zheng Chubing, a junior of English language, and Xu Jiaxuan, a freshman from English Innovation Class, received respectively a grand prize for English major and for non-English major; Li Yuanyuan, a freshman from English Innovation Class, and Qiu Yue, a sophomore from non-English Innovation Class, won third prizes in non-English major group.
This excellent outcome in the competition is a showcase of SCBC’s strength in foreign language training. It is also the result of the teaching reform of English writing in the School of English Language and Culture(SELC) and the Faculty of College English(FCE) in recent years. The students’ achievement shows not only their ability to use English comprehensively, but also their creative ability to express themselves in English in writing. Writing is a basic skill in learning a foreign language, and improving students’ ability to write can in turn improve their other skills in using a foreign language.
It is reported that Dean Wen Binli of SELC and Director Zhang Xiqun of FCE were invited as guest judges by the organizing committee to be present at the final and award ceremony of the competition.
