Zhang Zhijie wins a second prize at the 3rd “CC CUP” International Chinese Culture Translation Contest
On October 17, the national final of Interpreting Competition of the 3rd “CC CUP” International Chinese Culture Translation Contest came to an end at Chongqing University. After two rounds of fierce competition, Zhang Zhijie, a junior of English Translation from the School of English Language and Culture, won a second prize with his total score ranking the fourth among all the finalists, thanks to his solid bilingual knowledge, excellent interpreting skills and clear calmness on the stage.
The 3rd “CC CUP” International Chinese Culture Translation Contest was a multilingual event with Interpreting Competition between English and Chinese for Chinese students and foreign students respectively, and Translation Competition from English, Japanese, German, Russian and French to Chinese and vice versa. The Contest had seen a total of 9,860 participants from 536 institutions and enterprises around the world, so the scale was unprecedented and the competition extremely fierce.
Before the final, Zhang Zhijie had gone through a period of intense training by the Interpreting Training team of Ren Jia(the team lead), Zhu Huijiao, Qu Hua, and Huang Yongchong. The training sessions involved one-on-one practice and comments, counseling and Q&A, and preparation in terms of knowledge and mentality. Then the team lead accompanied the contestant in the final held in Chongqing, providing on-site guidance and support to help bring out the contestant’s greatest performance during the competition.
It is reported that the “CC CUP” International Chinese Culture Translation Contest is a global competition that is supervised by the National Committee for Postgraduate Program of Translation and Interpreting and co-organized by Chongqing University, Shanghai University, Beijing Language and Culture University, and Bilingual Research Institute of Chinese Studies of the Society of Chinese Pre-Qin History. Together with China in the Classics, a grand cultural show created by the China Media Group, the Contest is considered a strong advocate for the promotion of Chinese language and culture and an effective way to encourage students from home and abroad to study Chinese language and culture. It is quite an original concept with the kind of uniqueness that appeals to many college students nowadays. Zhang’s achievement in the Contest this year was once again a showcase for SCBC’s distinction of foreign language education. Now SCBC is on top of its kind in terms of student training quality, with the program of English Language and Culture rated as provincial key undergraduate program and the program of Translation as provincial first-class undergraduate program.
Prof. Li Tiecheng joins advisory meeting on convention and exhibition industry for Guangzhou Government
On October 19, the Information Office of Guangzhou Municipal People's Government held an advisory meeting on the high-quality development of convention and exhibition industry at Guangzhou International Media Harbor. Prof. Li Tiecheng, an expert on convention and exhibition who is in charge of SCBC’s program of Convention and Exhibition Economy and Management, was invited to attend the meeting. He is also head of Guangdong provincial research team for the integrated and innovative development of convention and exhibition industry.
The meeting was held online. A total of 7 representatives from the government, associations, enterprises and universities spoke and answered questions from reporters regarding the high-quality development of convention and exhibition industry in Guangdong. The meeting was covered in full by the China Media Group and the mainstream media from Guangdong, Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR. At the meeting, Prof. Li Tiecheng shared his views on how policies can guide and support the high-quality development of convention and exhibition industry and how specialized training of personnel can serve this purpose. Being invited to join such a high-level advisory meeting was not only an honor for Prof. Li Tiecheng but also a significant progress in SCBC’s efforts to develop the program of Conference and Exhibition.
Recently, SCBC held an meeting to appraise research proposals on the integrated and innovative development of convention and exhibition industry and a symposium on the innovative development of SCBC’s convention and exhibition program. An the meeting, experts from SCBC pointed out that SCBC’s research team for the integrated and innovative development of convention and exhibition industry should play a bigger role and exert its influence beyond SCBC to the whole Guangdong province, and even the Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao Greater Bay Area. The team members also expressed that with the support from the college, they would seize the new opportunity of innovative development faced by China's convention and exhibition industry, giving full play to its comparative advantages and taking advantage of the positive conditions for collaboration and cooperation, so that they could contribute to building the program of Convention and Exhibition into a brand and SCBC into a high-level private university.
One teacher and four students win Honorable Mentions at the 33rd Han Suyin International Translation Contest
According to the results of the 33rd Han Suyin International Translation Contest announced on October 21, Zou Yu, a teacher from the School of Asian Languages and Cultures, was awarded Honorable Mention in Japanese to Chinese translation. Four students from the School of English Language and Culture also won Honorable Mentions: Xu Liqin from English Class 4 of 2018 in Chinese to English translation, and Chen Hongyu from English of 2017, Liu Xinyue from English Class 1 of 2019, and Chen Jingsi from English Class 1 of 2020 in English to Chinese translation.
The 33rd Han Suyin International Translation Contest was co-hosted by the Translators Association of China (TAC) and Beijing Second Foreign Language Institute, with a total of 16 categories of bidirectional translation between Chinese and eight languages, including English, French, Russian, Spanish, Arabic, German, Japanese and Korean. The Contest has been the oldest and most influential competition in the world of foreign languages in China. SCBC was the only private university in Guangdong province that produced student and teacher winners this year, which was evidence of SCBC’s distinctive foreign language education and high-quality teaching and learning.
The winners said that the Contest provided a good platform for them to exercise their translation ability and improve their foreign language skills, and they would strive harder for more achievements in the future.
OSCBC holds ceremony for the appointment and certification of high-level experts
On the afternoon of October 21, the 2021 ceremony for the appointment and certification of high-level experts was held in C201. Executive President Wang Hua, Supervisor Gu Yeli and Vice President Zhao Fuchun attended the ceremony. Vice President He Aibing presided over the ceremony.
At the ceremony, Zhao Fuchun read out five announcements regarding the appointments of 2 professors, 11 associate professors, 5 high-level professionals, 20 lecturers, and 1 lab technician to the corresponding positions at SCBC.
As solemn and passionate tunes rang in the room, the newly certified professors and associate professors went to the stage and received their certificates and letters of appointment from Wang Hua and Gu Yeli respectively.
