SCBC ranks 6th in 2021 Shanghai Ranking’s Academic Ranking of Chinese Independent College
On April 26, Shanghai Ranking, one of the world's top four university ranking brands, released the 2021 Academic Ranking of Chinese Universities, in which SCBC, with a total score of 92.2, ranked 6th in the national and first in the provincial rankings of independent colleges. SCBC’s position in the ranking has been evidence for its comprehensive strength and comparative advantage.
Formerly known as “Best Chinese Universities Ranking”, Shanghai Ranking’s academic ranking has received widespread attention and recognition across society for its professionalism, objectivity and transparency. It has become a leading brand of university rankings in China with significant social influence and reference value. The 2021 Shanghai Ranking’s Academic Ranking of Chinese Universities evaluated more than 1,200 college and universities dedicated to undergraduate level education. Taking into account the differences between types of universities to ensure fairness of the ranking, Shanghai Ranking divided these higher institutions into categories of comprehensive universities, 7 types of discipline-focused universities and 3 types of non-public universities, and adopted a differentiated index system to rank them separately. The ranking of the three types of non-public universities (independent colleges, private colleges, and cooperative universities) was based on the two primary indicators of “Faculty Size and Structure” and “Student Training” with an emphasis on the achievements made in the sub-indicators of faculty size and structure, quality of enrollment, cultivation conditions, academic achievements, and training results. These indicators are appropriate and very much relevant to the realities and development path of the three types of non-public universities.
After 25 years of painstaking efforts, SCBC has built its core competitiveness around foreign language education with achievements leading to a distinctive advantage over other higher institutions of its own kind. It has now become an outstanding independent college in the province with a nationwide reputation and a leading position among independent colleges that are also focused on foreign language education.
SCBC is committed to building a team of high-level teaching professionals who are highly capable of effective instruction and scientific research with integrity and dynamism. At present, 41.1% of the faculty have high-ranking professional titles, 24.6% have doctoral degrees, and more than 1/3 have overseas experience of work or study. The college has made impressive progress in disciplinary development, with its Accounting program listed as national first-class undergraduate program, and the program of Translation and the program of International Economics and Trade as provincial first-class undergraduate programs. Another two programs, English Language and Literature and International Trade, have been rated as key disciplines with characteristics in Guangdong province. In terms of the quality of undergraduate education, the SCBC alumni are widely praised by employers, and the overall employment rate has been above 99% since 2010.
