Zhao Lei carries off champion at German Competition in South China
Zhao Lei, a senior student from the Department of German Language of the School of European Languages and Cultures, claimed the champion of the first German Language Competence(Multimedia assisted) competition in South China that was held at School of Foreign Languages of Sun Yet-sen University on November 16. Zhao will receive a DAAD scholarship that covers his expenses for a summer camp in Germany. Zou Ying, a junior, won a third prize and an “Audience’ Favorite” award; juniors Zhao Minhua, Liu Ruoni, and Chen Zichai received Honorable Mentions.
The competition is organized by the Guangzhou office of German Academic Communication Center, with the theme of “it is eight past eight now...(Es ist acht Uhr acht…)”. What is special about this year is that the contestants are required to show the competence via multimedia tools like pictures, Gifs, or videos. This is to challenge not only their ability to speak on the topic, but also their originality and proficiency of using multimedia tools. Zhao Lei’s ideas came from his understanding of life and time. With an individual perspective, he elevated the concept of time to a more abstract level that was concerned about humanity, plant, literature and art, state, etc. through videos, feature stories, and lyric prose.
The 1st Chinese Bridge competition: a glimpse of the beauty of Chinese culture
“The sun is setting behind the mountains,
The Yellow River’s flowing towards the sea.
To see afar a thousand li’s distance,
Up to a higher floor you have to be.
As Diana Paulina Medina Perez finished the last line of this popular poem of Li Bai’s, tumultuous applause resounded through Lecture Hall F101 for her mastery of Chinese language. She was right in the middle of her take among the fourteen contestants, who come from Mexico, Turkey, South Korea, and Russia, in the Chinese Bridge--Chinese Proficiency Competition for Overseas Students in China, which was held for the first time at South China Business College on the evening of November 21. Vice President Lai Zhili and Vice President Zhao Chen were among the many teachers and students in the audience.
In the opening speech, Vice President Lai Zhili said that the competition was intended as a bridge of communication between Chinese students and foreign students in China, and he hoped that the event could inspire foreign students at SCBC to learn more about the Chinese language and culture.
Contestants were put into two groups according to their level of proficiency, with recitation for the primary level group and prepared speech on “the world as one family” for the advanced level group.
Lee Yoona, who claimed the first prize of the advanced level group, said that she came to love Chinese culture after watching Chinese TV dramas. Her favorite one was LOVE O2O. It was this particular drama that drew her to South China Business College and to study Chinese language. Kang Yujin, one of the second prize winners of the advanced level group, used to go to secondary school in Shangdong province. “It was then that I became very much interested in China, “he said. “But I was then unable to continue learning Chinese because I had to return to do military service. I can’t give on my dream of learning Chinese and that’s why I’ve come to SCBC after my service was over.
All the contestants, though coming from different cultural backgrounds, have shown in the competition the same passion and love for the Chinese language, a language that not only opens the door to different cultures, but also works as a bridge through which the traditional Chinese culture can spread and go global.
