SCBC establishes partnership with University of Panama
On the morning of September 24, Executive Vice-President Lai Zhili held a reception to welcome Leonardo Enrique Collado Trejos, head of the University of Panama's Regional Center in Azuero, and his delegation. Also present in the reception were Mr. Yang Jianjun, director of the Center for International Cooperation and Exchange, Mr. Zhu Xuewen, head of the Department of Spanish Language, and some of the staff of the Center for International Cooperation and Exchange.
In the meeting, Mr. Lai Zhili briefed the guests on the basics of South China Business College, such as its history, disciplinary structure, campus and facilities, faculty as well as its distinctive strength in foreign language education. Leonardo Enrique Collado Trejos in return introduced the University of Panama to the host, and spoke highly of SCBC’s focus on foreign language training and international cooperation and exchange, the erudite professors of Spanish language and high-quality students, which, he thought, constitute the cornerstone of building long-term partnership between the two higher institutions. He hoped that his visit could speed up the materialization of specific projects of cooperation and communication. As an educator deeply influenced by Confucian ideas, he believed that education should be available and accessible to everyone, regardless of whatever background they come from, so that social progress can be facilitated with the widest support and contribution from the people. It is reported that Confucius Institute has been established in the University of Panama that offers opportunities for Panamanian students to learn Chinese language and culture.
After in-depth discussion, the two sides signed a memorandum of full cooperation. Free-of-tuition student exchanges will be the first project in the partnership. It is hoped that in the future there should be more exchange teachers and students between the two higher institutions for a wider range of pedagogical and academic communication.
Liu Ke, member of the visiting delegation who is in charge of a Chinese school in Panama, commented that it is a good way to disseminate traditional Chinese culture in South America by building Confucius institutes and schools in Panama, whose future development, facilitated by multilateral partnership, will provide a greater platform for the local students who love and want to learn Chinese language and culture.
The University of Panama is the top public university of great influence in the Central America country with the longest history and largest scale. With campuses over different regions of Panama, it has 65,000 students, 4,400 faculty and staff members and offers 120 undergraduate programs, 120 post-graduate programs, and 10 doctoral programs. There are also language centers for Chinese, Spanish, English, etc.
