Opening ceremony held to welcome 2019 freshmen
As the opening ceremony was held for 2019 freshmen on morning of September 15, a new journey filled with new hopes began to set sail.
In his opening speech, President Jiao Fangtai extended a heartfelt welcome to all the young men and women of fall 2019. Just like every towering tree grows from its root, and every meandering river flows from its source, the story of South China Business College goes way back to 23 years ago in 1996 when it was founded in response to the government’s call to rejuvenate our nation through building quality higher education. After 20-plus years of development, SCBC has been changing but it has never forgotten the original mission of cultivating students into professionals for the 21st century. As an undergraduate college, SCBC has been sticking to the philosophy of education that places its faculty and its students at the core and focuses on specialized training and ethical education of students. In the future, SCBC will spare no efforts to build itself into a high-level university with distinctive advantages in foreign language training.
To college students of the new era, President Jiao Fangtai gave three pieces of advice on how to lead a fruitful college life: first, stick to your dreams and go for them; second, work hard and make more progress in your studies; third, love your country and shoulder the responsibilities of a Chinese citizen. The proactive would take the lead in competition, and with courage and enterprising spirit they would eventually win the game. He hoped that new students could stay focused for their goals and dreams, fight through complacency and mediocrity, and break new grounds in this new chapter of life at SCBC.
First class at SCBC: a good beginning for international students
“Love your country, love China, and love SCBC.” This was what Ms. Chi Shengnü, dean of International School, expected of fall 2019 international students as she delivered a speech to them in their first class of the semester at Room G210.
Ms. Chi, while sharing her own experiences in seven years of overseas studies, encouraged international students to take efforts to overcome language barriers, crack down difficulties, and work hard to excel in studies. Moreover, she hoped that they should obey the school regulations such as on class attendance and dormitory life, be friendly and show respects to each other.
Then Mr. Xie Danping showed them how to get on with new life on campus, for instance, taking transportation, paying water and electricity bills, opening bank accounts, getting mobile phone numbers, etc.. He also stressed the importance of obeying the regulations on campus, for example, following the timetable for class and rest, the management of college dormitory, and the rules of report-before-leave in holidays.
In this semester, 36 international students from nine countries such as France, South Korea, Mexico, Turkey, etc. begin to study at SCBC as exchange students, of which 33 are learning the Chinese language, and three are studying in degree programs. The three students respectively from Iran, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, who study in the program in International Trade and Economics and the program in International Commerce (both programs taught in Chinese and English), have made the first group of overseas degree students at South China Business College.
