2019 International Symposium on Polar Issues: A Great Success

  On June 13, the 2019 International Symposium on Polar Issues was held at South China Business College. Present at the Symposium were experts and scholars from many scientific research institutions and universities home and abroad, including China Nordic-Arctic Research Center, Russian National Center Arctic Antarctic Research Institute, Russian Arctic Science Center, Hong Kong Polar Research Center, Ocean University of China, Dalian Maritime University, and Guangdong University of Foreign Studies. Among the attendees, there were Deputy Director of the Research Department of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education, Mr. Jin Tianlai, Consul General of the Russian Consulate General in Guangzhou, Mr. ViktorPashkov, and the leadership of South China Business College, Chair of Board Ding Xiaojun, Supervisor Gu Yeli, Executive Vice President Lai Zhili, Deputy Secretary of the SCBC Party Committee Fu Hongxin, Vice President Zhao Chen, and Vice President He Aibing, who also presided over the meeting.
 
 
 
  Executive Vice President Lai Zhilsaid in his speech that South China Business College will take advantage of the opportunity of hosting this Symposium to further consolidate its academic foundation forfuture development and comprehensively improve the level of its education and scientific research, so as to make its due contribution to the personnel training of the country and the studies of polar issues.
 
 
  Professor Yang Jian, deputy director of the Nordic-Arctic Research Center and vice president of the Shanghai Institute of International Studies, delivered a speech. He spoke highly of SCBC’s geographical advantages, its distinctforeign language features are, andits clearorientation of education. He recognized that since joining the Nordic-Arctic Research Center in China, the SCBC Polar Research Center has made a positive contribution to increasing various parties’ knowledge and understanding of the Arctic issues and their global influence, and to promoting the sustainable development of the Arctic region and the coordination between China and the Arctic nations.
 
 
  On behalf of the Guangdong Provincial Department of Education, Mr. Qi Tianlaiexpressed in his speech warm congratulations to South China Business College on the convening of the 2019 International Symposium on Polar Issues. He hoped that the SCBC Polar Research Center would firmly grasp the opportunity of the province’s policy of attracting talented people to Guangdong and try to improve the innovation environment at South China Business College. At the same time, SCBC should strengthen the mechanism of personnel introduction and training to allow more competition among talented researchers and innovators, and give full support and guidance to those research staff who are dedicated to the work of answering the country’s call for mass entrepreneurship and innovation and serving the province’s transition to innovation-driven development.
 
 
 
  Mr. ViktorPashkov, consul general of the Consulate General of the Russian Federation in Guangzhou, delivered a speech. He explored the possible areas of cooperation between China and Russia based on Russia's national development policy, after a summary of the exchanges and developments between the tow countries in recent years. He believed that the "One Belt, One Road" initiative provided more space of cooperation and communication between China and Russia. He hoped that Russia will strengthen trade cooperation with China, particularly the southern China, and bring more benefits to both countries.
 
 
 
  In this academic feast of thoughts and ideas, experts and scholars have explored and analyzed the many issues around the theme of the Symposium--Polar Tourism, Economic Cooperation and Sustainable Development, including the opportunities and challenges of China's participation in Arctic economic activities, the international cooperation mechanism in the polar regions, human beings’ adaptation in the Arctic life and the use of biological resources, the new pattern oftransport and logistics system in the northern hemisphere with the "Polar Silk Road", the evolution and causes of Russia's Arctic policy towards China, Hong Kong's role in polar research and recent development, the development of polar tourismand its environmental impact, the trend of the China-Arctic international economic and trade cooperation.
