Prof. Zheng Kaixuan Invited to Attend and Co-chair the 11th Asia Pacific Global Summit on Healthcare

On May 8-9, the 11th Asia Pacific Global Summit on Healthcare was held in Tokyo, Japan. Experts and scholars from countries and regions such as Asia, Europe, Africa and Oceania gathered in Tokyo, Japan to discuss the challenges and countermeasures to health issues in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large.

The summit focused on major health issues such as medical safety, healthy lifestyle intervention and chronic disease prevention, nursing education, and obesity prevention. Zheng Kaixuan, professor from the School of Economics and director of the National Institute of Health and Population Ageing, was invited by the organizing committee to be one of the co-chairs of the summit. He also delivered an academic report on the campaign to reduce the risk of coronary heart disease and reduce its economic burden.

Prof. Zheng Kaixuan pointed out in the report that the high incidence of chronic diseases such as coronary heart disease, high medical costs and other heavy disease-caused burdens pose unprecedented health and economic challenges for modern human society. In China, for example, the number of patients diagnosed with chronic diseases has exceeded 260 million, and the incidence of chronic diseases among the elderly is as high as 92%. As early as 2010, the cost of health care for chronic diseases in China had reached 1,291.077 billion yuan, accounting for 70% of the total national health expenditure. Developed countries such as Australia are also facing enormous health and economic challenges brought about by chronic diseases. A large number of medical researches have shown that unhealthy lifestyles such as lack of exercise have become an important risk factor for the high incidence of chronic diseases. Therefore, promoting healthy lifestyle interventions such as encouraging more exercise is undoubtedly the best coping strategy for preventing chronic diseases and reducing economic burden. Zheng’s report was highly regarded by experts and scholars attending the conference. He also conducted extensive exchanges with international experts on the promotion of research in health economy at the South China Business College.
