Wu Manxia Wins A First Prize at the 14th Japanese Essay Contest for Chinese
Recently, the 14th Japanese Essay Contest, a writing competition for Chinese students sponsored by the Tokyo-based publisher the Duan Press and the Center for China-Japan Exchange Studies, had made public this year’s winners. Among them were students of Japanese Language from the School of Asian Languages and Cultures, including first prize winner Wu Manxia, third prize winner Chen Yongqi, and Wang Jing, Wang Qiong, and Xu Danhe who were recognized with honorable mentions. SCBC’s Japanese teacher Azusa Kimura was awarded “Excellent Supervisor”.
The themes for this year’s contest were “why Japan is charming today to Chinese young people?”, “what I want to plan for a Chinese language festival in Japan?”, and “what did your teacher say to you that you’d never forget?”. Entrants could submit three pieces of essays respectively on the three themes. Based on the quality of grammar and content of the essays, prizes would come out after three rounds of assessment, with one entrant for top winner, five for first prizes, 15 for second prizes, 50 for third prizes, and 200 for honorable mentions.
First prize winner Wu Manxia is a member of both Japanese speaking competition training camp and Japanese emcee training camp at South China Business College. Already an outstanding emcee at the training camp, she won a second prize (for seniors) at the 4th Japanese Speaking Contest for Private Universities in Guangdong Province. In this essay contest, South China Business College has been highly honored for the fact that she won a first prize along with other five high-achieving students from prestigious universities like Tsinghua and Fudan.
It is reportedly that the Japanese Essay Contest for Chinese, said as one of the most influential Japanese writing competitions, has been held annually since 2005, with only about 2000 winners out of a total of 40,000 entrants from Chinese colleges and universities nationwide for 14 years. Of the 4031 pieces of essays received from 189 Chinese colleges and universities this year, only 81 have been awarded prizes. The prize-winning and honorable mention essays each year have been compiled into a booklet and published in Japan. This publication has been highly applauded in the two countries, especially in Japan. The contest has also been reported by Japanese television channels and newspapers.
