First Innovation Class of Economics & Management Kicks off to Cultivate Versatile Talents

An opening ceremony was held at the F101 Conference Hall on the afternoon of September 29 for the 2018 Innovation Class of Economics & Management (hereinafter referred to as the Class) to train versatile talents. Hosted by Provost Zhou Wengui, the ceremony was attended by Supervisor Gu Yeli, Vice President He Aibing, Vice President Wang Xinjie, and all the students admitted to the Class.

Vice President Wang Xinjie delivered an opening speech. She pointed out that rapid growth of economic development has helped break the boundaries between academic disciplines or industrial sectors. As China has witnessed rising demands for versatile and multifarious professionals in recent years, a priority and challenge for China’s higher education reform is to develop new models of cultivation. For many institutions of higher learning in China, orchestrating undergraduate programs under the umbrella of broader academic disciplines has become a popular option. Under these circumstances, SCBC has set up such a program of its own as Innovation Class of Economics & Management, as part of its effort to push forward pedagogical reform, cater to the need of students for individualized training, and serve the regional economic development in Guangdong. This program is aimed at training high-quality specialists who are outstanding in terms of foreign language skills, professional expertise, and comprehensive strength.

It is reported that apart from the “National Standardization” requirements set by the Ministry of Education, the Class will focus on empowering students with “broader knowledge, solid foundations, sharp ingenuity, and high competence”. A special plan has been tailor-made for the Class, featuring individualized training arrangements, strict requirements, and innovative management. The training is basically student-oriented instruction, following a problem-solving pattern where students are encouraged and inspired to engage in discussions. With an emphasis on formative evaluation, students will be accessed in the form of exams, papers, research achievements, investigation reports, competition results, inventions and patents. A tutorial mechanism has been set in place with a team of high-achieving tutors who will play a role in the Class’s academic performance, project management, and other activities respectively, and who will advise students on how to develop the ability to explore academic subjects and encourage them to pursue further studies after graduation. All these efforts are meant to help students of the Class grow and succeed.

Gu Yeli said in a conclusion speech that as China has ushered into a new era of innovation-driven development, higher education should keep up with the times and try to be more innovative in the urgent task of training specialists. He also laid down three expectations for the students. First, aim high. Young people, college students in particular, should take responsibilities and study hard for the rise of the nation. Second, never stop challenging yourself. Students should be proactive in their learning, read widely, think critically, and improve the ability to learn independently and innovate. Third, persevere in spite of hardship. Though burdened with heavier academic workloads, students of the Class should be even stricter with themselves in the ordinary routines of life and studies so that they can achieve ex-ordinary success in the future.
