SCBC Teacher Deliver Studies at Annual Conference of Arabic Literature
Xu Xian, an SCBC teacher of the Arabic Department, School of Asian Languages and Cultures, has recently attended and delivered her research paper at the “2014 China Annual Conference and Symposium on Arabic Literature” held in Beijing University of Foreign Studies.
In the session of “Reinterpretation of Arabic Literature Classics”, Xu Xian read out her paper “‘Oral Formula’ in the Serial Interleaved Structure of Arabian Nights”. Based on the framework of oral formulaic theory, she transversely inquired into the relationship between the serial-interleaved narrative structure and the oral formula of stories in the classical Arabian Nights from the perspective of “discourse” as one essential narration element. By virtue of the novel perspective, Xu’s study was highly appreciated by the seminar.
A Hands-on Snack-Baking Lesson in the Room of English Time and Space
The SCBC English Time and Space is set up by the Department of College English as a setting for students to practice their English. A hands-on baking activity was held in the Campus Cottage on 9th December, hosted by foreign English teachers — Danny, Benjamin and Lorena.
Instructed by foreign teachers, students were learning how to make custard pudding and waffles on the spot. They were mixing and stirring ingredients for the bakery, heating them in microwaves and then savoring their bakery with foreign instructors. Thanks to teachers’ directions coupled with their hands-on experience, students have naturally learned baking-related English vocabulary and personally tasted western baking culture. Huang, an SCBC student, said: “I have been taking great interest in activities in English Time and Space. I enjoyed it immensely today, as we have not only talked with foreign teachers about dessert in the western style but also experienced the process of making it. What a good time!”
