Dean of Business School, University of Bolton Visit SCBC
On the afternoon of November, 13th, Martyn Shaw, Dean of Business School, University of Bolton, from the United Kingdom, gave a lecture on the topic “The Path to a Successful Industry Upstart” for students in SCBC along his visit. It is the second visit of Martyn and a few other faculty members from Bolton Business School to SCBC for academic exchanges.
Martyn’s lecture started with the case study of Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia. He analyzed that this acquisition was not merely meant for market expansion to meet consumers’ demands, but, more importantly, to improve its industrial structure, so as to lay a foundation for the company’s future development. Later in the interactive phase of the lecture, students actively raised their questions, like “What is the purpose of Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia?” In response, Martyn shared his viewpoint: This acquisition was Microsoft’s strategy in coping with the challenges of the trendy facet of smartphone business in order to sustain and expand its strengths for the purpose of assuring the market share against its rivals.
In the wake of the first visit in July, this was Bolton’s second academic exchange with SCBC. Martyn was highly impressed by our students’ active involvement in the interactivity, quick-minded responses and fluent English conversation.
