Korean Language Teacher’s Paper Applauded at International Conference
Recently, three Korean language teachers of SCBC attended the 4th Pan-Pearl River Delta International Conference on Korean Language Education held at Guangxi Normal University in Guilin. The Conference had attracted many well-known experts in the field, such as those from Ewha Women’s University in South Korea, and Fudan University in China. Ms. Chi Shengnǚ, whose presentation of academic paper was highly thought of at the conference, was promoted to chair the group session on Korean Linguistics, responsible for leading and concluding the discussions. With her excellent performance on her job, she made herself the first independent college teacher to stand at the podium as the chairperson in such an important international event for Korean language education.
Japanese Language Teachers at International Conference
From November 9 to 10, Ms. Zhang Xiyan and Mr. Ren Shenghao, teachers of Japanese language from the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, attended an academic conference under the theme of “Recognition of Otherness and Japanese Education—Japanese Studies”. After the plenary session, the participants were streamed into six groups to discuss respectively on various research areas, including literature, language, culture, and thinking. In the first discussion group for literature, Ms. Zhang, with her presentation entitled “The awakening of self-consciousness of the post-war Japanese women—a case analysis of the ‘Sound of the Mountain’”, was engaged in lively discussions with several Chinese and Japanese experts on the status of women in China and in Japan.
SCBC Student Awarded Third Prize at English Speaking Competition
On November 10, Lu Jianfen, a SCBC student from the Department of English Language and Culture, was awarded a third prize at the 2013 FLTRP Cup & Guangdong Collegiate English Speaking Contest held in Guangzhou. In the competition, Lu had won the audience’s applause and the judge panel’s recognition by showcasing her outstanding language skills, solid logical thinking, good manners and calmness on the stage.
University of Huddersfield Donates English Books to SCBC
Mr. Chen Jia, manager of University of Huddersfield’s China Office, came to visit SCBC on November 11. In the meeting, Vice President Lai Zhili expressed the hope of cooperation in terms of teacher training as well as short-term or long-term student exchange. The two sides also discussed the possibility of collaborating “3+1”and “2+2”programs for SCBC students. Later, Mr. Chen, on behalf of University of Huddersfield in the UK, gave 50 books in English as gifts to SCBC library.
Mexican Consulate General in Guangzhou Donates Spanish Books to SCBC
On November 12, SCBC students of Spanish major went to a lecture entitled “Sino-Mexico Trade Relations and Job Prospects” held at Mexican Consulate General in Guangzhou. In the talk, Consul-General David Nejera illustrated the amazing Mexican culture and its booming foreign trade, particularly the employment opportunities for Chinese students brought by growing economic ties between the two countries. At the end of the lecture, the Consul-General presented 49 books in Spanish to SCBC.
U.S. Embassy’s International Education Exhibition Tour Arrives at SCBC
Sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in China, the Exhibition Tour of American Culture and Education came to SCBC on November 13 and briefed SCBC students about American international education. Mr. Yang Jiawei, senior education commissioner from the Public Affairs Section of the United States Consulate General in Guangzhou, and a visa officer from the Consulate General, explained to the audience related issues on study in the US, applying schools and student visa.
Dr. Esther Enns from Saint Mary’s University in Canada Visits SCBC
On November 14, Dr. Esther Enns, dean of the Faculty of Arts of Saint Mary’s University, led a delegation to visit SCBC. At the meeting with the guests, Vice President Lai Zhili proposed to extend the partnership between the two institutions. Later, the two sides explored and exchanged ideas on such issues as “2+2”and “2.5+1.5”programs, credit transfer, course articulation, etc..
