2013 Sports Meets Openings
November 7 saw the opening of the 10th Sports Meet for SCBC faculty and staff, with 15 teams of teachers and staff members in the parade showing their specially prepared programs to the spectators in the stadium. Particularly, foreign teachers from twelve countries of America, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Spain, Turkey, Ukraine, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines and Egypt held up a banner that read “7 continents meeting in SCBC” to express their excitement. Dressed in traditional Chinese Kungfu clothes, the foreign teachers, including the exchange teacher from Turkey Ms. Seden, were playing Tai Chi to the 2008 Beijing Olympics theme song, “You and Me”.
The 10th Sports Meet for students started on November 8, with student phalanxes from eight departments putting up a fantastic show in the opening ceremony. They also took the opportunity to showcase the distinctive features of respective departments. The international students from South Korea greeted the spectators in Korean language, waving the national flags of the two countries. To celebrate the opening of the two-day Sports Meet, there were also dancing performances such as cheerleading dances and waltz.
Professor from Argentine ICBC Foundation Talks on Business Negotiation
On November 1, Professor Silvana María Cerini from the Argentine ICBC Foundation gave a talk on Business Negotiation in Room C202. The speaker introduced the concept of negotiation power to the audience, explored the causes of conflicts in business negotiation, and emphasized the importance of strategy, information and self-management in the process of negotiation. She pointed out that the conflicts in business world today have to be solved by negotiators taking advantages of such conflicts, or “negotiation power”. She also suggested the standards of measuring negotiation power as well as some useful tips for students to improve their ability to negotiate in business scenarios.
Philippine plants at SCBC
On November 1, Ms. Faith, a teacher from the Philippines, grew some plants brought from her home country on the lawn before the 1st Teaching Building and the “Happy Farm” next to the swimming pool. More than 20 saplings of Jackfruit, Narra( the national tree of the Philippines) and Golden Shower were planted in SCBC’s soil.
Talk on English Speaking Skills Held by Management Department
On October 30, the Department of International Business Management invited John, a SCBC foreign teacher, to give a lecture on English speaking skills in Room G101, as one of the activities for the 6th ESP Speaking competition. The audiences, who participated in the competition or wanted to improve English speaking skills, were very attentive to the speaking skills illustrated by the speaker.
English-only Talk: Cultural Differences
Organized by the Department of College English, an English-only talk entitled “Our Differences” was held on October 30 at Room C302, with Ms. Salma, a foreign teacher, as the speaker. The foreign teacher gave an introduction to the cultural differences between countries and regions in the world. She suggested that students should respect and try to understand such cultural differences for a better and harmonious society.
