SCBC Teaching Supervisor Attends Provincial Seminar on Teaching Supervision

From November 22 to November 24, the 7th Provincial Seminar on Teaching Supervision of Higher Education was held in Heyuan City, Guangdong Province.

Prof. Jian Yuanchao, deputy-director of SCBC’s Teaching Supervision Committee, attended the seminar and delivered a speech to introduce the teaching supervision of SCBC and the effective system of ensuring teaching quality in the college.

During the seminar, participants were engaged in the heated discussions of the standards of evaluating teaching quality, the operation mechanism of teaching supervision, and the monitoring system of quality teaching. It is unanimously agreed that the quality of teaching is as vital as the lifeline to the survival of every institution of higher learning, regardless of nations, ideologies, and political systems, and that a scientific, systematic framework of teaching quality standards should be tailor-made for different categories of higher education. The standards for undergraduate teaching in universities or colleges should neither be leveled up to those for postgraduates, nor lowered down to those for polytechnic colleges, which are either too harsh or too easy for undergraduate students. Moreover, heuristic approaches should be adopted in higher education teaching to create friendly atmospheres in the classroom, full of interactions and innovations. Therefore, the attendees from different universities and colleges in the province all emphasized the importance of building harmonious, people-oriented relations between supervision and teaching, supervision and learning, and supervision and management. In these relations, supervisors play their own roles: Teaching supervisors surely should regularly observe lectures of teachers and communicate with them; should know much about students’ studies and give them meaningful guidances; and should take part in the college’s inspections of teachings and the designs of curricula and syllabuses.
